evolution of early churches

pendentive

a pendentive is "any of several spandrels, in the form of spherical triangles, forming a transition between the circular plan of a dome and the polygonal plan of the supporting masonry." - dictionary.com

this unique feature of architecture is a further development of churches, expanding on the early idea of the basilica. during this time period, there was an idea of religion as an institution, where people would go to churches and visually read what the architecture provided. this created a visual language, that is demonstrated in early and present day churches.

the pendentive is used in many churches, including the Hagia Sophia, which was the first masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. the dome sits at the center of the building, and is 102 feet in diameter and 182 feet in height.

another religious structure that uses the pendentive is the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, located in istanbul, turkey. it is more commonly known as the Blue Mosque, due to the blue tiles that cover its interior walls. the design of this mosque draws from a combination of Byzantine architecture and Ottoman architecture. the interior is lined with over 20,000 handmade tiles in more than 50 different designs.

Connections between axis and hierarchy

In class on Friday, we looked at examples throughout the campus of how buildings are designed on an axis, and how the interiors of these buildings have their own axis. The colosseum in Rome was in a way an axis for the city. It was the main focus where many events were held and people gathered. The building itself has an axis from front to back where people can look over from the second floor and watch performances below.

This same idea of axis is repeat

ed in the structural aspects of the buildings as well. The colosseum is a circular building, so it has an emphasized center point. The arches of roman architecture are also a repetition of the circular shaped structures because of their symm

etry and rounded top. The idea of an axis represents the main center path or focus. Another example of an axis, or an important focus of ancient rome is the aqueduct. The ability of transporting water into the city makes water a very important aspect of the civilization, so it becomes a main focus of the city. When we were walking around campus on Friday, we looked at interiors that focused on a strong center point, and we also talked about how certain buildings were the main focus of the campus because of their purpose.

UNCG was mainly a school of education and music, which is why these two buildings are the main focus of the most prominent axis on campus, similar to how water was a very important aspect to the ancient roman civilization, as well as the colosseum.

Following Friday's tour of the campus, our group started wondering how architects arrived at where axes are placed. Our question was: do architects and designers consider axes before they design a building? Is this usually out of necessity or is it typically a more aesthetic decision?

As a group, we were really interested in the importance of axes. Some expressed how they didn't notice all of the different crossing points on campus until this class. We talked about how small differences such as the placement of axes these can make a big difference in how people perceive their environments.

Example: The entrance to McIver features negative space just before its entrance. It is a perfect instance where stacking can be shown to include the immaterial, as well as the material (negative and positive space).

How Greensboro relates to the Roman city

Like the Roman city, Greensboro today has a similar city grid. In Roman times, there were two main streets that ran perpendicular to one another marking the center point. These streets helped one navigate throughout the city and know where they were. A great help in marking the landscape was seen in the Roman Coliseum. Though not within the city grid and off to the side, it alone would help one know where they were in relation to things around it. Today in our own city of Greensboro, we can see this same effect. Though the Greensboro Coliseum is not within our downtown city grid, it is still on the perimeter, making understanding the landscape and ones location in relation to it easy to understand and communicate with others. So, take a look around to the city's of today and just how many pull from the Romans ideas?

McDonald's Golden Arches: Why Do They Impact Us So?

It is a symbol known throughout the world, the golden arches of McDonald's. You can travel the world and find them in most countries. It is symbol that crosses many languages, cultures, and politics... Yet it is something that has left an impression on people's minds, so much to the point McDonald's does not even need to use words anymore, only this symbol to be recognized by the general public of the world.

My question is, why does this symbol hold so much power? Granted, McDonald's has done a pretty good job of cramming the logo down our throats for decades now... no pun intended. I think it has something to do with the history of architecture.We have learned in class the Romans used the arch in their buildings, and were very fond of it's shape eventually using them wherever you could place one.

The arch is a hybrid in design. It is the idea of the scared circle and the groves of columns coming together to create a whole new shape. I think in this description lies the idea of why it is such a powerful logo those golden arches. They have taken two of the earliest forms of human thought and design and combined them together. We already know that these circles and columns in antiquity were a global thing. They were found throughout the globe. So they already were a symbol recognized by most. I believe that is why the arch was able to develop like it did, and also become such a simple, yet powerful logo for the McDonald's corporation.

Now these golden arches can be found all over the planet, but I think their original history stems as far back as the first buildings humans ever decided to construct. The Romans gave us the arch, but they did not get there alone. It may be a pop culture icon now, but I think it has been in culture all along, and that I think lies the power behind the golden arches of McDonald's.

the pantheon, not to be confused with the parthenon, sits in rome, italy. as we learned in class, there is an idea of the world and the heavens being depicted in the interior, opposed to the exterior of this building. thinking about the things that are entailed around the notions of the world and heaven, it is interesting to note that the italian artist Raphael was buried in the Pantheon at his request, along with several italian rulers. this just further shows how important this "temple" was, and still is today.

Modern-Day Pyramids : Echoes of Giza throughout the World

With many examples of ancient architecture, we see forms that have inspired architecture in today's world. This holds true with the pyramids, which were once only used as burial chambers for the Egyptians. Now we see pyramids as major landmarks throughout the world, another example of stacks and an importance placed on the center.

Pyramids at Giza

Used for burial, the center points upward reaching towards the sun, showing the importance of those at the center and providing what is necessary to the afterlife.

Karlsruhe Pyramid: Karlsruhe, Germany c.a. 1679-1738

The Karlsruhe Pyramid serves as a monument of the city as well as an original burial vault at the bottom, much like the Pyramids at Giza.

Pyramids at Ohso Commune: Pune, India

These pyramids were built for meditation purposes, another example of how ritual is enforced through form.

Goja Music Hall: Prague

This performance hall serves as a gathering and ritual place for listening to performances. The most importance place is in the center where the performances take place, which is emphasized by the vertex.

Louvre Pyramid: Paris, France c.a. 1989

The glass Louvre pyramid juxtaposes the classical museum itself with its modern geometric forms. It serves as both a landmark and an entrance point into the museum. Used for circulation, the pyramids form emphasizes a growing importance as you move inward towards the museum, becoming more sacred as you move from the street closer to the artwork.

circles + groves + stacks are three pure forms that are prevalent throughout time in design. they can be found in their singular form, but are most likely found paired with one or the other. as we learned, groves represent groups of trees/people, reaching vertical. this timeless form is shown a variety of ways, and used for both structural and decorative purposes. here are some examples of this basic form shown throughout time, by ways of the column:

Penny for Your Thoughts

The U.S. penny has been around for hundreds of years, and just like architecture, the penny is a designed object. There have been many different looks to the penny that have each emphasized an important fact that the designer wanted to show case. For example:

The wheat penny was designed over 70 years ago and features 2 wheat stalks embracing the text in the center. The wheat, when combined with the curved text of "E. Pluribus Unum", makes a complete circle, which we have learned in class provides importance and emphasis on what is in the center. This design wants to emphasize the worth and value of the penny first, and the place of origin second.

The Lincoln Memorial penny highlights Lincoln's life and service. It has a detailed image of his memorial, in which Lincoln is in the center. This memorial was dedicated to him for his work with freeing the slaves and changing our nation, and this is exactly what the designer of this penny wanted to do. This penny is the only one to feature an image of Lincoln on both sides of the penny. In fact, Lincoln was the only person to be depicted on both sides of a coin until 1999 when George Washington was on the New Jersey state quarter.

This penny from Lincoln's Bicentennial collection pinpoints Lincoln's birth and early childhood in Kentucky by featuring a log cabin and his birth year, 1808. It was designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Jim Licaretz and shows his humble beginning.

This penny, also part of the Lincoln Bicentennial collection, was designed and sculpted by Charles Vickers. It shows Lincoln as a young boy, taking a break to study while chopping wood. This depicts Lincoln as being a model citizen and shows what he stood for.

This penny shows Lincoln as an adult in Springfield Illinois, standing next to the state capitol, which is where Lincoln started his professional life. It was designed by Joel Iskowitz, who made Lincoln's scale so much larger than the one of the capitol to show Lincoln's grand impact in compared with the government.

This penny was the last of the Lincoln Bicentennial collection and features the White House, showing Lincoln's influence over the entire nation.

Design Food for Thought- Making the world a better place through using everyday material and objects

Have you ever heard of the saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure"? As a designer, we can take objects and materials considered to some to be garbage and no longer usable and make into a piece of art, a structure, and a useable thing again.

Below are some unbelievable facts about how much we as Americans waste a year... take a look!

"Americans represent 5% of the world’s population, but generate 30% of the world’s garbage."

"In a lifetime, the average American will personally throw away 600 times his or her body weight, which for an average adult would leave a legacy of 90,000 pounds of trash at the end of their lifetime."

"Of the garbage Americans throw out, half could be recycled, which is enough to fill a football stadium from top to bottom everyday."

In looking at American Waste facts, I want to emphasize the importance to recycle and reuse cardboard. Take a look at how much cardboard saves...

"Cardboard One ton of recycled cardboard saves:

• 390 kWh hours of electricity. • 46 gallons of oil. • 6.6 million Btu’s of energy. • 9 cubic yards of landfill space.

Cardboard and paper waste make up 41% of the municipal solid waste stream.

Recycling cardboard takes 24% less energy and produces 50% less sulfur dioxide than making cardboard from raw materials."

As you can see, saving cardboard helps out in many ways. Recycling also....

• It saves money. • It improves efficiency. • It reduces energy use.

• It reduces fuel use. • It saves landfill space. • It improves air quality. • It improves water quality. • It reduces the rate of global warming

So what can we as designers make out of cardboard? How can we reuse and recycle this material to make something for someone else or our self?

lascaux archeology evidence yields new findings

as we delve into the objects, spaces, buildings, and places of the first human inhabitants on the planet, we visit quite a number of sites around the world. recent archaeological information sheds new light on the caves as LASCAUX, enclosures that i often equate with the first interior design. it turns out that the spiny ridges on the horses depicted in the famous cave drawings may be more documentary than we first assumed. new evidence indicates that horses with spiny ridges actually inhabited the area in and around the caves.

Not History, But the Future

All semester we have focused on the principles of design as they relate to history, to the ideas of great minds of a different time, but this class hardly immerses in the cultivation of 'modern' architecture in the here and now of this generation. So as a close to this semester, I would like to consolidate the works of modern architects who I admire and inspire my work. This is the Dr. Kheelan house (not sure on the spelling) in Old Salem. This house is being restored by http://www.robertpearlantiques.com/. Something I noticed in the house was the room seperation in the basement.

This is the "refrigerator room". There is a spring fed spout in the wall which would pour water into the bin. The overflow tubing holds the water's height. The workers would keep parishables like milk and cut wrapped meats in the bin to keep them cool. This one room was set under the kitchen below the ground level in order to keep the temperature as cool as possible. These are modern advancements and the search for an easier energy source. This can be compared to the Green movement in the present time as we revert back to the search for easier renewable energy. Our personal energy revival?

This seems to me to be the appropriate response to patio furntiure. Instead of cutting wood and molding it into form, grow the tree and mold its shape. Sustainability becomes nature, and nature is the "root" of history.

The other day I ventured to the amazing furniture market in downtown High Point! As I walked through the show rooms I sketched conceptual couches + chair backs, photographed textiles and fell in love with pillows. In the final room that I viewed that day my heart was swept away by a tide of ties!

I was not only blown away at the creativity but I was green with envy for not thinking of it first!

I found that the brilliance behind the design is by a company called

Dream Weavers.

Of course I had to share this with you all because it is absolutely inspiring and we all know how our Patrick adores bow ties.

Chicago: The Architectural Wonder

While Blakeni beat me to the punch with her amazing chair snapshots, I would like to share a myriad of the timeless and experimental architecture Chicago has to offer and also a few interesting destinations that really encapsulate the experience of this wonderful city.

Below is Crown Hall, a marvelous International style structure built by none other than Mies van der Rohe. Crown Hall happens to be the school of architecture on the campus of IIT. Below is a showcase of a few of their truly impeccable models in both craft and creativity. By the way, the students don't keep blogs, go figure!

Here is the McCormick Tribune Campus Center designed by Rem Koolhass with the metra running straight through the ceiling. A truly inspirational building that incorporates angles throughout in very unique, spatial configurations, which can be seen in these images through the exterior tilt and in the one of a kind consolidation of the ramp and stairs.

The Ant Series 7 Chair!.......these chairs are literally scattered throughout the student center...almost as if a colony of ants took over....

The Aqua Tower was designed by Jeanne Gang, the first female to build a skyscraper in the midwest. The buildings floor planes extrude sensuously out of the rectangular grid of the skyscraper and form rippling awnings and balconies for the residents. Furthermore, the blue tinted glass heightens the sense of cascading water, almost as if it ripples downward onto the protruding floor plates.

The former IBM Headquarters was the last skyscraper designed by Mies van der Rohe in the famous International style and sits directly across from the new Trump International Hotel.

This is a section of the river walk near Hotel 71 where we stayed.

Here is an interesting light fixture that stood out to me in the lobby of Hotel 71.

Of course, every great city has a wu-wu.......

During class today, Patrick had discussed Tiffany glass being close to home in some structures around Greensboro. Here is an example of a Tiffany glass window that can be found at the original First Presbyterian Church.

"According to the sign, posted beside the window, "the theme for this beautiful Tiffany-style window comes from the Gospel verse, 'Let the little children come unto me... for such is the kingdom of heaven.' It was sponsored by members of the Scales family in memory of their mother Effie and father Junius, who was a prominent 19th-century Greensboro attorney and state legislator." Today, the window is housed on the property of the original First Presbyterian Church which is now part of the Greensboro Historical Museum." (1)

Change or evolution doesn't just happen with one thing at a time. For instance take the various dances for instance. It wasn't just one hand move that changed. It was an accumulation of multiple elements such as the arms, legs and hips. Take that same concept and apply it to architecture. It wasn't just an arch on a wall and then the archway. The artifact that I believe represents a revolution in design is a simple teapot. The United States, having come from England, and very rooted in the English customs, considered tea time a very important time of the day. This was an everyday activity. It represented comfort and security, and as the world trade increased, so did the repetuar of teapot styles. England and the United States were accustomed to the tall rounded bottom square top teapot, in contrast to the Eastern short, round teapot. As we can see in this rendering, this now American teapot is almost as straight replica of a Chinese one of similar times.

Unique Looking Churches in the World

I find it interesting what comes up when you type in a phrase or some keywords in Google. In my case, I typed in 'unique church' and came upon some interesting images. A couple of them I found under the same webpage (10 Most Unique Churches). However, there are two that I believe strongly illustrate verticality.

Hallgrímskirkja, a Lutheran parish church located in Reykjavík, Iceland, not only demonstrates verticality but the shape also guides your eye to its center which leads your eye up to the heavens. Another church is the Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida in Brazil and the look, although different, has the same intention that guides your eye up towards.

This poem was written by Michael Reittinger inspired by this old abandoned cottage in Boarhills, Scotland. This picture is so interesting because of the difference in the clouds on the left and right. He does great comparing this scene to jazz and the emotion see in the cottage.

The beauty and fashion of contemporary style furniture not only interest interior designers but also captures the eye of set designers and producers. Providing tasteful eye-catching pieces to furnish and enrich their sets.

Even though I fall under the designer demographic, I must admit that I’m a little obsessed with chairs… more than I should be and it is always a treat when I recognize a chair in a movie or music video.

Here’s a little “where’s waldo” game I wanted to start in the light of chairs. Throughout the rest of the semester take note of famous chairs that you see used in the media and feel free to blog about it or email a T.A your findings!

medieval citizens stayed bound within the limits of their understanding of their world. this ideal vision stood in opposition to the realities of medieval life, one shaped by the church and limited further by local governance. gothic cathedrals suggest key moments on this map (and many others like it) through scale and placement near the center of this idealized world.

This week, we have been discussing how music fits architecture, or vice versa- how architecture fits music. In many civilizations, buildings seem to replicate the music they produced. This idea that the music came before the design is based on writing from Friedrich von Schelling in 1803:

"Architecture is music in space, as it were, a frozen music."

This theory can be applied to...

The hanging sculpture seems to take a lifelike form, gaining momentum as the individual forms overlap and the structure spins. It reminds me of the winged maple seeds that twirl as they fall; this action frozen in space. The rhythm this creates resembles music. Personally, I thought immediately of this song by Enya, "Sail Away" (Orinoco Flow).

In reviewing the posts from the Phoenix group, I chose to feature Lindsay Grace's poem. Lindsay chose to incorporate a bit of humor in her poem based on a conversation we had in group when picking out the photo.

Sixteen blades all in a row,
what they are for, I do not know.
Eight bolts ring a rosie to form a curved shape,
your surface rusted, filled with scrape.
My mind knows you turn round the void in the mid,

Lynx: Music and Architecture

Today, the students were to fashion a blog post combining an image we selected in class with a poem. After reviewing all of the posts, I chose to put the spotlight on Cory Odell this week from our group, the Lynx. He successfully pairs the image with beautiful words about how Music and Architecture intertwine in his mind, making it obvious that he grasps the relation between the two.

a rhythmic scale flowing up and down like the sun's rise and fall
waves cannot challenge a tempo of these sorts, for waves fall and break
sails try to mimic, but the style isn't quite their speed

up and down my eyes follow the ridges, a man-made mountain raising up into gods sky, but his hand didn't do so much for this creation

his order has been thrown. no longer is his unity in effect.

this is nothing short of visual opera, with highs and lows
with tones that give the skin chills

no beat or lyrics can be heard
but emotion pours out into my soul
and the very echos of the stone call to me to say

In this Youtube clip, David Byrne from The Talking Heads creates a giant sound installation in an old New York city industrial building. In fact, the sound installation is the infrastructure of the building itself, becoming the actual instrument. . "The activations are of three types: wind, vibration, striking. The devices do not produce sound themselves, but they cause the building elements to vibrate, resonate and oscillate so that the building itself becomes a very large musical instrument." natalie and i set a goal that, every week, some aspect of our class would be experiential. last week (in the drizzle), we walked on campus to discover circles + axes, amplifying our conversation about rome and the importance of both of these design approaches to architecture + design today. here's the work sheet from the field visit...

architecture + music

this week, we tackle the idea of music + architecture, a subject that hearkens back to a famous quote by goethe "i call architecture frozen music" (1829). a couple of decades before, friederich von schelling wrote:"architecture is music in space. as it were, a frozen music." (1803) in a publication, philosophie der kunst. david byrne's 16 minute TED talk is quite insightful. i recommend it.

of all the spaces we visited on campus during the field visit on friday, 04 february 2011, justify the single space or moment where you believe commodity, firmness, and delight are at their highest achievement. use details about materials, light, color, experience, and understanding of the principles + elements of design in your response. in that we understand circles (and their corresponding 3D forms) as marking sacred spots, explain whether or not the space or moment you selected achieves this approach to design. in other words, does the space or moment mark something of significance or value in our understanding of the campus and who we are as a university?
